Hiking

Around Janvrin's Island we have many wonderful hiking areas. A drive along the magnificent Cabot Trail, one of the most beautiful and scenic roads in North America, Parks Canada has prepared many trails for all hiking levels. On most trails you will see moose, deer and sometimes then blackbear. To give you an idea of the trails, here are some of our favorites:

1.The Janvrin's Trail -- will guide you around the Island following the coast line in approximately 3.5 hours. It is an easy walk on beaches and rocks at low tide. You will see seals, many sea birds, eagles, white tip deer and much more.

2. Delorier Peninsula Trail -- at the east of Janvrin's Island is a 3 hour hiking tour around a beautiful Peninsula. On one side is the rough Ocean and on the other side the calm inland waters. On this tour you will see seabirds and herons hunting, especially at low tide.
To ensure a safe hiking experience prepare each hike carefully with our check list.

3.
Cape Hogan Trail -- starts at the Clearwater fishplant and follows the coastline up to the mackerel Point. It is a difficult trail which goes through thick brush and sometimes over wet terrain. But you will have a beautiful view over the Chedabucto bay and with some luck you can see whales and dolphins out off Cape Hogan.

4. Hike with the Moose

Enjoy a one-day trip to the Cape Breton Highlands with a very good chance of seeing moose.  It is a 2 ½  hour drive one way and 1 ½ to 4 hours hiking time, (depending on participants).

We start early in the morning to be at the site at sunrise. We will observe moose (if they are around ) for approximately one hour. Then we will breakfast at Cheticamp.

A second hiking tour will be on a selected trail. It is a 2–4 hour hike with a good chance of seeing moose and other wildlife. This walk is through beautiful forests and valleys. For lunch, we will go to a cozy fishing lodge in the Margaree Valley.

This tour is guided by Mr. Ingo Vollmer. All security/emergency items and VHF/maps etc. will be provided. Cost per person: $35.00 Canadian. Additional costs include breakfast, lunch and park entrance fee.

Note:
Nova Scotia law states you must carry a knife, matches and compass if you are entering the woods.

Hiking in the Cape Breton Highlands is a"must" during a stay in Cape Breton. These National Park is located on the north end of the island. The park entrance is approx.. 2.5 hours drive from VIPI Lodge.

Each hike is different, so plan what you want to do and where you want to go before you start your hike. Let somebody know where you want to go and when you intend to be back. We know a lot of trails very well and will gladly give you any additional information you need to have a great time in the wonderful wilderness.
